  • 19th November 2025

Mexico has declared itself ready to host the world’s biggest soccer celebration as President Claudia Sheinbaum officially presented the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a historic milestone as the first country to host the tournament three times, in 1970, 1986, and now 2026. Sheinbaum emphasized that the event represents a unique opportunity to showcase Mexico’s cultural richness, hospitality and economic strength on a global stage.Gabriela Cuevas, Mexico’s Representative for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, announced that Mexico will host 13 matches across three cities, Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, with 17 training facilities prepared for national teams. The Mexico 2026 program will also bring free cultural and sporting activities to all 32 states, ensuring the World Cup experience reaches the entire country.

Jurgen Mainka Ruiz, Executive Director, FIFA Mexico, described the upcoming World Cup as the largest in history, featuring 48 national teams and more than 800,000 fans attending matches in Mexico. The FIFA Fan Festivals are expected to attract over 6 million visitors, while global TV and digital audiences could surpass 6 billion viewers.

Official estimates suggest Mexico will welcome over 5.5 million international visitors, generating between US$1.8 billion and US$3 billion in economic impact.

As part of the event’s social component, the Mundial Social (Social Tournament) initiative will include the construction of soccer fields nationwide, as well as the organization of “mini World Cups” for children, youth, seniors and people with disabilities. The FIFA Fest zones will offer free, live match screenings for the public.

Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico’s modernized airport infrastructure is ready for the challenge, citing investments of MX$9 billion to upgrade the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), as well as improvements in Guadalajara and Monterrey. The train connection between the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and the capital will further enhance mobility for visitors.

With these preparations, Mexico reaffirms its long-standing football tradition and strengthens its global reputation as a premier tourism and event destination.

MBN also reported that Mexico will host the World Cup’s Inaugural Match. Regarding financial aspects, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government will respect the fiscal commitments made between the Ministry of Finance (SHCP) and FIFA. The SHCP held meetings with FIFA representatives to review and define the tax and customs measures that will apply to companies involved in the event, ensuring compliance with Mexican law and honoring the agreements established during the Peña Nieto administration.
