CONTECON Manzanillo tops Mexico with 12M TEUs

  • 22nd January 2026
At the start of 2026, the Port of Manzanillo’s cumulative container throughput reached 12 million TEUs, solidifying its position as Mexico’s leading port for import and export container throughput. This achievement is attributed to 12 years of operation and over USD900 million in cumulative investment, which is crucial for Mexico’s foreign trade. The terminal’s outstanding performance is attributed to the trust of its customers, shipping companies, and strategic partners, as well as a comprehensive operational strategy based on logistical efficiency, installed capacity, and its advantageous geographical location on the Pacific coast. These factors have made Manzanillo Terminal the port’s largest container terminal and solidified its position in domestic and international supply chains.

In 2025, the terminal’s imports grew by over 10.5%, and exports by over 12.5%, a stark contrast to the stagnation of Mexico’s Pacific port industry. This achievement reflects the terminal’s stable and competitive operations, aligned with the dynamics of trans-Pacific trade and domestic market demand.

“The vitality of trade with Asia is decisive; imports from the region, particularly from China, have grown by more than 70% in the past four years,” said José Antonio Contreras, CEO of CONTECON Manzanillo, emphasizing Manzanillo’s strategic position as the premier port and its proximity to the country’s main production centers.

Upon completion of Phase III, the terminal will have 1.3 kilometers of berths, equipped with quay cranes with a 60-meter reach and hybrid-powered rubber-tired gantry cranes, capable of handling vessels up to 400 meters in length and with a throughput of 24,000 TEUs, while maintaining high efficiency and operational safety. In terms of environmental impact, the application of hybrid technology has reduced fuel consumption by approximately 50%, and the terminal has maintained ISO 14064 carbon neutrality certification since 2022.

These achievements also reflect the company’s strong human capital, thanks to its investment in training and social responsibility initiatives including the CONTECON charity run, educational scholarships, and participation in the Mexican television network Teletón México. Looking ahead, the company will continue to invest in infrastructure, technology, and talent, aiming to achieve an annual throughput capacity of over 2 million TEUs and enhance Mexico’s logistical competitiveness at the port. The port handles approximately 70% of Asia’s imports from the Pacific.
