Mexico gets off to a winning start

PART.01

Opening Ceremony Recap

On June 11, 2026 Eastern Time (ET), the FIFA World Cup 2026™ officially kicked off in Mexico City. This edition marks the first time in history that the World Cup is co-hosted by three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With an unprecedented scale, a total of 104 exciting matches will be held. The opening ceremony featured a splendid display of Latin American indigenous culture and a star-studded artistic performance, kicking off this quadrennial global sports event.

The opening ceremony took place at the world-famous Estadio Azteca. As the only legendary stadium in the world that has hosted two FIFA World Cup finals (1970 and 1986), Estadio Azteca was brightly lit and packed with spectators that night. Centered on Mexico’s ancient Aztec civilization, the opening ceremony performance vividly reproduced the long history and unique cultural charm of Latin American indigenous people through epic dances, traditional costume displays and immersive music, allowing billions of global audiences to immerse themselves in Mexico’s cultural heritage.

The artistic performance segment was star-studded, with many internationally renowned artists taking the stage one after another. Among them, Colombian pop diva and frequent World Cup theme song performer Shakira performed alongside with Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy to perform the official theme song of this World Cup, “Dai Dai“. The dynamic melody, passionate singing and stunning stage special effects pushed the atmosphere to a climax, with more than 70,000 spectators singing in unison to celebrate the arrival of the World Cup.
