Mexican football has reached a pivotal moment. In December 2025, Club América announced the sale of 49% of its shares to the global investment giant General Atlantic. This transaction not only marks the first large-scale entry of private equity firms into the Mexican football industry but also sets the stage for a new phase of development for Club América and its home ground, Estadio Azteca (now renamed Estadio Banorte).

The details of the transaction are as follows: Club América has been valued at $490 million (it is equivalent to approximately RMB 3.433 billion), with General Atlantic acquiring a 49% stake in the newly formed entity Grupo Águilas for approximately $240 million (it is equivalent to approximately RMB 1.682 billion). The new entity Grupo Águilas will hold Club América, Estadio Banorte, and the surrounding land. Grupo Ollamani retains a 51% controlling stake, ensuring the continuity of the club’s long-term strategy and leadership.

Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca) will host the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and this transaction provides crucial funding for the stadium’s modernization and event preparation. Meanwhile, General Atlantic has partnered with Kraft Analytics Group (part of the Kraft Group that owns the NFL’s New England Patriots) to bring advanced data analytics and international operational expertise to Club América.

Looking ahead, Club América will leverage General Atlantic’s funding and resources to accelerate growth in sports, business, and infrastructure, further solidifying its position in the Mexican and international football markets. Estadio Banorte is undergoing a comprehensive modernization program to enhance the fan experience and increase its commercial value. Moreover, this partnership will open up broader market development opportunities for the club.

This partnership is not only a milestone for the Mexican football industry but also sets a precedent for future international capital entering the football market. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Club América and Estadio Banorte will become one of the focal points of global football.
