AMIA:Mexican auto production hits over 2.6M units in 8 months
The Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) released its monthly report on the production, export, and domestic sales of light vehicles, based on data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Figures for August 2025 show that the sector remains a driver of the Mexican economy, with record performance in production and exports, despite a slight contraction in the domestic market.
Automotive Production Exceeds 2.6 Million
UnitsIn August 2025, light vehicle production in Mexico reached 349,856 units, representing a 0.8% decrease compared to August 2024. Even with this year-on-year decline, the recorded volume made August 2025 the fourth-best August in the history of the national automotive industry, demonstrating the sector’s resilience amid a complex international environment.
From January to August, over 2.6 million units were produced, a figure that reflects a 0.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This result marks the strongest historical performance for the first eight months of the year since records began in the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL).
Mexican automotive production remains one of the country’s most important industrial pillars, thanks to its integration into North American value chains and its role as a key supplier to international markets.
Exports and Domestic Sales: Mixed Performance
In August 2025, Mexico exported 296,796 light vehicles abroad, representing a 1.4% growth compared to the same month in 2024.
This volume positioned August 2025 as the second-best August on record for exports, surpassed only by the figures from 2018. This reflects strong demand for Mexican vehicles in international markets, particularly in the United States—the primary destination for the country’s automotive exports.
From January to August, exports exceeded 2.2 million units, a figure that represents a 1.0% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. While this data shows an adjustment from 2024, AMIA emphasized that performance remains stable and competitive, considering changes in global demand, supply chain adjustments, and the challenges of the international economic context.
In contrast, the domestic market saw a decline in sales. In August 2025, 124,180 new light vehicles were sold, representing a 3.0% decrease compared to August 2024.
As a result, cumulative sales from January to August reached 958,006 units, a figure that reflects a 0.7% contraction compared to the same period in 2024. These numbers indicate that while the industry maintains its production and export strength, domestic demand is still adjusting following years of recovery in the national market.
AMIA’s report also included sales figures for vehicles with alternative technologies. In August 2025, 11,707 units—including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles—were sold in Mexico, representing a 17.9% year-on-year growth compared to August 2024.
This volume meant that alternative technology vehicles accounted for 9.4% of total national sales in August, solidifying their position as an increasingly relevant segment within the Mexican automotive industry.
Sales distribution by technology type:
8,444 units were hybrids, accounting for 72.1% of total sales in the segment.
2,403 units were electric vehicles, with a 20.5% share.
860 units were plug-in hybrids, equivalent to 7.3% of the total.
From January to August 2025, these vehicles accounted for 9.2% of the national market, with a 17.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The sustained growth of this segment reflects the gradual transformation of the automotive industry toward models with higher energy efficiency and lower environmental impact, aligned with global electrification trends.
The overall assessment of Mexico’s automotive sector at the end of August 2025 shows a scenario of production and export stability, with record levels in both areas. The production of over 2.6 million vehicles and the export of 2.2 million units confirm Mexico’s role as a global automotive platform.
