Over the past three years, BYD has grown into one of the most influential automotive brands in Mexico, amid a decade-long boom for Chinese automakers in the Mexican market. Part of its growth journey has been built on strategic alliances with two major Mexican enterprises: Liverpool and Banorte.
Although the Shenzhen-based automaker does not release official sales figures, unofficial estimates from the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) reflect its significant market presence in Mexico.
Standout sales data in the first half of 2026 drives steady ranking growth
In the first six months of 2026, BYD recorded total sales of 33,969 units in Mexico. The figure outperforms fellow Chinese brand MG Motor (27,800 units sold in the same period), as well as long-established brands Ford (25,019 units) and Hyundai (26,434 units).
With this performance, AMDA ranks BYD as the eighth largest automaker in Mexico with a 4.2% cumulative market share for 2026. Alejandra Vargas, analyst at Ve por Más, attributes BYD’s rapid growth to its diverse product lineup, competitive pricing and aggressive expansion strategy.
The Liverpool partnership laid early market foundations
Ariel Méndez, also from Ve por Más, noted that BYD’s earlier partnership with Liverpool was terminated due to unmet target goals, yet the cooperation delivered positive momentum during its operation. The cross-industry alliance brought cross-selling opportunities to attract new customers, boosting overall revenue for both sides and raising BYD’s regional visibility.
Banorte launches new energy vehicle financing cooperation
In 2026, BYD signed a new cooperation deal with Grupo Financiero Banorte to launch exclusive financing plans for DENZA, BYD’s premium luxury brand, with interest rates starting at 7.88%. Banorte has become BYD’s primary financial partner in Mexico.
Banorte’s data shows that from January to May 2026, the bank issued loans for more than 15,000 hybrid and electric vehicles, 71% of which were for BYD and DENZA models. Brian Rodríguez, analyst at Monex Securities, states the partnership lets Banorte deepen its layout in EV financing. The bank’s auto loan portfolio grew 30% year-on-year in Q1 2026, far outpacing the 8% growth of its total credit portfolio.
