China-made vehicles account for 28% of new car sales in Mexico

  • 29th June 2026

According to data from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), from January to May 2026, Chinese-made cars accounted for 28% of new car sales in Mexico, up from 18.9% in the same period last year.
This data covers all vehicles manufactured in China and exported to Mexico, including Chinese brands such as BYD, MG Motor, and Geely, as well as models produced in China by international automakers such as GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Kia. Chinese car brands now hold a 17% market share in the Mexican new car market.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s domestic car production decreased by 1,474 units compared to the same period last year, with Mazda, Nissan, and BMW seeing production declines of 27.5%, 27.3%, and 19.8% respectively in the first five months of this year.

The Mexican Automobile Dealers Association (AMDA) pointed out that among all international car companies, General Motors sells the largest number of Chinese-made models in Mexico. In the first five months of this year, the company sold a total of 57,343 Chinese-made vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 10.7%, accounting for 76.5% of its total imported vehicles. During the same period, Ford sold 6,613 Chinese-made cars, a year-on-year increase of 37%; Chrysler sold 4,357 Chinese-made cars, a year-on-year increase of 24.8%.

Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automobile Dealers, stated that the market share of both domestic Chinese brands and Chinese-made models from international automakers continues to expand. He believes this trend indicates that China’s influence in the Mexican auto market is no longer limited to Chinese brands themselves, and as more international automakers utilize Chinese production bases to supply Mexico, the influence of “Made in China” in the local market is expected to continue to rise.
