CN-MX aqua-trade snapshot: 2025 Jan-Sep

  • 14th November 2025
According to China Customs statistics, from January to September 2025, China’s total exports of aquatic products and their derivatives reached USD14.8 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%. Accounting for 19.9% of China’s total agricultural product exports, aquatic products have become an important pillar of China’s agricultural exports.

Mexico occupies a significant position in China’s aquatic product export market. Data from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products shows that from January to July 2025, Mexico ranked 8th in terms of China’s exports of aquatic products and their derivatives, serving as a key testament to the steady development of aquatic product trade between the two countries.

The following table presents data for January through September 2025.

Trade Overview
Aquatic product trade between China and Mexico demonstrates strong complementarity and growth potential.

Specific data from China Customs shows that from January to September 2025, China’s exports of shrimp products to Mexico reached USD181 million, fish products USD207 million, and tuna products 3USD9.02 million. These three categories account for the vast majority of China’s aquatic product exports to Mexico.

Mexico’s exports to China also performed impressively: shrimp products reached USD30.84 million, cod USD7.54 million, and cuttlefish/squid USD9.67 million.

Highlights of China’s Exports to Mexico
China’s aquatic product exports to Mexico exhibit distinct product category advantages and solid industrial chain support.

Beyond shrimp, fish, and tuna, specific categories include tilapia (USD14.36 million), scallops (USD1.60 million), and salmon (USD1.64 million), forming a diversified product matrix.

The growth of China’s aquatic product exports to Mexico is inseparable from the continuous upgrading of the domestic industry and the support of local characteristic products. Taking Fujian Province as an example, its export volume of shrimp and shrimp products ranks first in China, with Mexico being its largest single market outside Asia for shrimp products. In the first seven months of 2025, Fujian’s exports of shrimp products to Mexico reached 820 million RMB, accounting for 15% of the province’s total shrimp product exports.

Features of Mexico’s Exports to China
Leveraging its unique geographical location and marine resources, Mexico exports a range of high-quality aquatic products to China.

In addition to shrimp, cod, and cuttlefish/squid, exports include jellyfish (USD7.70 million) and abalone (USD900,000), reflecting the diversity of Mexico’s aquatic resources.

The growth of Mexico’s aquatic product exports to China benefits from the deepening pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in agricultural science and technology, fisheries, and other fields. In January 2024, Victor Villalobos Arámbula, Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, held talks with Tang Renjian, China’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture.

Cooperation Prospects and Future Outlook
With the in-depth advancement of economic and trade cooperation between China and Mexico, aquatic product trade is expected to embrace broader development space.
On November 5, 2025, Chen Daojiang, Chinese Ambassador to Mexico, paid a courtesy call on Julio Berdegué Sacristán, Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. The two sides conducted friendly and in-depth exchanges on further strengthening agricultural cooperation between the two countries. Both agreed that the depth and breadth of pragmatic cooperation between China and Mexico in agricultural science and technology, fisheries, agricultural product trade, and other fields are increasingly expanding. This close cooperative relationship will provide more robust institutional guarantees and policy support for aquatic product trade between the two countries.

As bilateral relations deepen, China-Mexico aquatic product trade is bound to usher in a more promising future, continuing to bring tangible benefits to the people of both countries. This trade cooperation not only enriches people’s dining tables but also promotes the exchange and progress of fishery technology, contributing maritime strength to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
