Despite the rise in electromobility that has been recorded in recent years, Eugenio Grandio, president of Electromobility Association Mexico (EMA), warned that there are still important gaps to consolidate the sector.
Mexico exceeds 50,000 electric units but must accelerate expansion
Grandio highlighted that, as of June 2025, Mexico exceeded 50,000 electric units in circulation, a figure driven by tax incentives, public-private partnerships and greater environmental awareness. However, he insisted that this number still represents less than 1% of the national vehicle fleet, so the expansion must be accelerated. In terms of infrastructure, the executive reported that there are already 2,200 public charging stations, but only about 30% are fast charging (50 kW or more), which limits their use in long-distance trips or in cargo transport operations.
Charging infrastructure and regulation: urgent pillars for 2030
Another key point addressed was electricity generation capacity: “To cover the projected growth, we would need to add an additional 3 to 5 GW of clean energy in the next decade, along with a smart grid that allows massive vehicle charging, without compromising the electricity grid,” Grandio explained during his participation in the GTI Summit. Regarding public policies, he urged the immediate publication of an Official Mexican Standard (NOM) for electric vehicles that regulates safety, interoperability and quality of service standards. He also pointed out that the processes of importing batteries and the lack of regional incentives slow down the installation of assembly plants and the development of the local ecosystem. Finally, he outlined a vision for 2030: 70% of new cars sold in metropolitan areas should be electric or hybrid. To achieve it, he proposed a scheme of temporary subsidies, technical training programs and a national electromobility plan that articulates the public, private and academic sectors.
