Heavy vehicle production & exports rebound sharply in Mexico, July 2026

  • 17th August 2026

Mexico’s heavy-duty commercial vehicle industry achieved a strong single-month rebound in July 2026. Production rose 51.8% year-on-year, exports grew 66.7%, wholesale sales increased by 19.1%, while the domestic retail market remained sluggish.

Wholesale market performance

The wholesale market maintained positive growth. A total of 2,590 heavy vehicles were wholesaled in July, up 19.1% year-on-year. Cumulative wholesale volume from January to July 2026 reached 17,566 units, a slight 5.1% year-on-year increase. Both cargo and passenger heavy vehicles recorded sales growth.

Retail market downturn

The retail market showed opposite trends to wholesale channels. July retail sales hit 3,043 units, dropping 9.9% year-on-year. Cumulative retail sales in the first seven months of 2026 fell 20.1% year-on-year, and weak domestic demand became the main pressure for the industry.

Year-to-date production & export data

Despite the sharp monthly rebound of production and exports in July, cumulative figures from January to July 2026 declined year-on-year. Local heavy vehicle output reached 14,675 units and exports hit 13,117 units in July, while cumulative production and exports both decreased by 6.1% year-on-year.

Core industry demands from ANPACT

The National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Manufacturers (ANPACT) put forward multiple development demands for the industry. It called for accelerated domestic fleet renewal, a stable industrial investment environment, and consistent and clear trade rules during USMCA negotiations.

Two major challenges for domestic manufacturers

The industry association pointed out two major industrial challenges. Massive imports of used heavy vehicles from the U.S. squeeze sales of domestically produced new trucks, with used truck sales accounting for roughly 53% of new truck sales. Some imported vehicles involve customs undervaluation, disrupting fair market competition.

Industry follow-up solutions and planning

ANPACT is cooperating with Mexico’s finance and customs authorities to optimize customs valuation mechanisms and create a fairer competitive environment for new domestic vehicles. The association also attended a special urban passenger transport conference to formulate long-term supporting policies for freight and passenger vehicle sectors.
