Manzanillo port leads Mexico’s 2025 imports

  • 22nd October 2025

In the first three quarters of 2025, Manzanillo Port achieved a record volume of goods handling, solidifying its role as Mexico’s primary import gateway. According to the National Port System Administration (Asipona), imports accounted for 66% of total cargo in tons, exports 15%, and transshipment and cabotage operations 19%. As Mexico’s leading Pacific commercial port, Manzanillo connects the country to Asia, America, and Europe, supporting national trade expansion, with containerized cargo representing 73% of commercial activity, underscoring its pivotal role in global supply chains.

In August, the port set a historical record for 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), positioning it as one of Latin America’s most dynamic maritime facilities. Among other cargo types, mineral bulk contributed 16% (up 11% year-over-year), agricultural bulk 5%, and general cargo 6%. Land traffic also rose 4%, with nearly 906,000 trucks entering the port from January to September, peaking in July and August. Concurrently, 1,242 vessels arrived, with 68% handling containerized cargo, reflecting robust international trade demand.

The port’s expansion projects, such as “Nuevo Manzanillo,” are projected to boost capacity for containerized cargo and hydrocarbons, supporting Mexico’s economic growth. Despite global trade uncertainties, Manzanillo’s volume rose 10%, with imports surging 15.7%, highlighting its strategic importance as a nearshoring and Asia trade hub. Handling nearly half of Mexico’s imports, the port drives manufacturing and logistics advancement.
