During May 2025, industrial activity in Mexico registered an advance of 0.6% at a monthly rate, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI) published by INEGI. This growth was led by the construction sector, which rebounded 2.8% compared to the previous month. In addition to construction, the activities of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, water and gas also grew with a monthly increase of 0.4%, as well as manufacturing industries, with a slight increase of 0.1%. In contrast, mining fell 1.1%, affecting the overall performance of the indicator.
Manufacturing industry maintains annual dynamism In annual comparison, manufacturing production showed a growth of 1.4%, consolidating itself as the only large industrial sector with sustained growth compared to May 2024. Subsectors such as the manufacture of electronic equipment (4.2%) and electrical accessories (0.2%) stand out, in addition to a 26.4% rebound in “other manufacturing industries”. On the other hand, mining continued its downward trend with an 8.4% annual drop, particularly affected by services related to this activity, which fell by more than 34%. The energy sector also declined 3.8%, and construction contracted 1.0% year-on-year. Within the construction sector, construction showed an annual growth of 5.0% and specialized works advanced 1.8%, which helped partially offset the 24.2% drop in civil engineering works. This contrast reflects a rebalancing between the different types of work within the sector.
Between January and May 2025, total industrial activity accumulated a fall of 1.4% compared to the same period in 2024. While construction fell 1.6% and mining fell 8.8%, manufacturing remained stable. Some industrial subsectors, such as petroleum products manufacturing and printing and related industries, posted cumulative positive results.
Despite weakness in sectors such as mining and energy, the Mexican manufacturing industry remains a key pillar of the national economy, showing resilience in a mixed industrial environment. Its stability reinforces Mexico’s role as a strategic platform for industrial production in North America.
