Mexico and US agreed to pause tariffs

  • 13th March 2025

On February 1st, 2025, the US President Donald Trump signed an executive order, imposing a 25% tariff on products imported from Mexico and Canada and 10% from China.

On February 3rd, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced, that a 30-day suspension of the 25% US tariffs on Mexican goods had been secured through an agreement requiring enhanced border cooperation.

On March 4th, the US President Donald Trump reinstated 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports.

“Nobody wins with this decision. On the contrary, it affects the people we represent”, Sheinbaum said, condemning the unilateral move for harming Mexican and US businesses and citizens. She emphasized that tariffs would stifle job creation in both countries.

Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico does not seek an “economic or trade confrontation” with the US. “We aim to enhance our competitiveness through regional cooperation in response to the economic and trade advancements of other regions.”

In the same day, Mexican President Sheinbaum declared at a press conference that Mexico would respond with “tariff and non-tariff measures,” with details to be announced at Mexico City’s central square, the Zócalo on March 9th, 2025.

According to a March 5th, 2025 update from White House press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, President Trump has granted a one-month exemption to auto tariffs for Mexico and Canada.

On March 6th, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and her US counterpart Donald Trump have agreed on another month-long pause to a 25% tariff on Mexican goods that comply with the rules of origin of the North American free trade agreement known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“As President Trump mentions, Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on all those products within the USMCA,” she said in the message.

The two leaders agreed to continue working together on cross-border issues and they agreed those products will be exempt from the tariff until April 2nd, 2025.
