Mexico City Airport remodel for 2026 World Cup

  • 20th October 2025

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) General Director Juan José Padilla Olmos stated that the airport’s remodeling is 15% complete, with 70-80% expected to be finished by the 2026 World Cup next summer. Since mid-May, refurbishment has been underway in the central areas of both terminals. In Terminal 1, work covers the public concourse area (gates 1-3), Bravo hall, modules V and XI, and F2 hall; in Terminal 2, it includes N hall, arrival and departure halls, the airport train, filters M and K, and connecting corridors.

To mark the World Cup, a giant fiberglass soccer ball has been placed in Terminal 2’s rotunda. Work will pause by mid-May at the latest to accommodate around 5 million expected visitors in Mexico City alone and resume in August to complete the remaining 20-30%, including administrative offices and warehouses. The total renovation cost is approximately $460 million, with $162 million already invested, and all work is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Jesús González Vallarino, deputy director of construction at Lado Tierra, noted that all remodeling has been done without suspending flights, with funds sourced from the terminal’s own revenue. Beyond preparing for the World Cup, the project will elevate Mexico City’s status as an international aviation hub, enhance visitor experiences, and support tourism growth, expected to bring significant economic benefits to Mexico.
