Mexico launches a special certification for Chinese tourists

  • 5th February 2026

To further expand its market for Chinese tourists, Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) is advancing a new version of the “Approaching China” (Cerca de China) service certification guidelines. This certification primarily targets tourism service businesses such as restaurants and hotels, guiding them to optimize aspects such as language support, reception procedures, and the overall tourist experience by clarifying service standards, thereby enhancing Mexico’s overall competitiveness in the Asian tourism market.

Regarding the certification process, participating companies must first register with the National Tourism Registry (RNT) and then contact a certification consultant through their own channels or state-level tourism departments, submitting relevant materials to enter the review stage. Subsequently, the tourism authorities will conduct on-site assessments, and the entire process will take no more than 90 days. After the assessment results and related documents are reviewed and confirmed by the Department of Tourism Certification (DGCT) of the Ministry of Tourism, qualified companies can obtain the certification mark within approximately 10 business days.

The Mexican Federation of Tourism Associations (Fematur) stated that the certification system helps to attract Chinese tourists more precisely. Related data shows that Chinese tourists stay in Mexico for an average of about 10 days and spend an average of about $1,300 per person, significantly higher than other international tourists. Their spending level is about 3.8 times that of ordinary tourists and also higher than the average expenditure of international air passengers.

Industry insiders also pointed out that although Chinese tourists have strong spending power, Mexico still has room for improvement in related supporting services. Currently, the number of qualified Mandarin-speaking tour guides nationwide is limited, and further efforts are needed to strengthen the training of professional personnel to improve the quality of service.

In addition, the Mexican Ministry of Tourism held the Mexico National Tourism Exhibition (Tianguis Turístico de México) in China last year, with many states and tourism organizations participating to showcase their rich tourism resources. The aim was to promote tourism and cultural exchanges between the two countries, attract investment, and deepen bilateral cooperation.
