Mexico tops US EV imports in 2024

  • 21st October 2025

Mexico became the leading supplier of electric vehicles (EVs) to the United States in 2024, surpassing Japan, South Korea, and Germany, according to the Third Mexico Mobility Report by EvolvX, developed by Latam Mobility. The country shipped 145,000 EV units to the United States, representing more than two-thirds of its total production of 220,000 vehicles that year.

“Mexico not only doubled its electric vehicle production in 2024, reaching 220,000 units, but also became the main supplier to the United States,” said Rebeca González, co-founder, Latam Mobility. She highlighted that this growth was driven by increased investment from international manufacturers and a strong domestic automotive value chain, allowing Mexico to triple its EV exports to the United States between 2023 and 2024.

“This shift confirms Mexico’s strategic role as a key component in North America’s clean mobility supply chain, supported by its competitive manufacturing base, skilled workforce and expanding charging infrastructure,” González added.

Data from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) shows that hybrid and electric vehicle production totaled 214,203 units through September 2025, a 39.3% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

The United States remained a net importer of EVs in 2024, with exports declining nearly 15% year over year to fewer than 200,000 units, while imports rose 40% to 630,000 vehicles. “Mexico became the largest EV trade partner of the United States, with net exports of 145,000 units,” the IEA reported.

The export surge was led by US OEMs such as General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, producing models including the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Cadillac Optiq, Mustang Mach-E, and Wagoneer S in Mexico. Toyota also contributed with hybrid models, including the Tacoma Hybrid.

Japan and South Korea each exported about 135,000 vehicles to the United States, while the European Union ranked fourth with approximately 110,000 units.

Latam Mobility emphasized Mexico’s central role in Latin America’s EV market, alongside Brazil and Colombia, which together accounted for over 80% of regional sales in 2024. Mexico led in hybrid vehicle sales, while Brazil dominated the electric and plug-in hybrid segments.
