Minimum Wage Increase Shorter work week approaching

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced in her December 3, 2025 morning press conference a minimum wage increase for 2026: 13% in the general zone to 315.04 pesos per day (≈ ¥ 121.6 CNY), 9,582.47 pesos per month (≈ ¥ 3,700 CNY), and 5% in the northern border free zone to 440.87 pesos per day (≈ ¥ 170.2 CNY), 13,409.80 pesos per month (≈ ¥ 5,183 CNY). She stressed that the move will not cause inflation, and that agreements have been reached with businesses to keep the basic consumption basket and fuel prices stable. The goal is that by 2030 each worker will earn the equivalent of 2.5 basic consumption baskets.

Additionally, she proposed a bill for a gradual reduction of the workweek to 40 hours by 2030 (46 hours in 2027, 44 in 2028, 42 in 2029), sent to Congress. Overtime is limited to 12 hours per week, with double pay and on a voluntary basis for for workers. This policy aims to improve labor conditions and promote economic growth.
