COX announces $4.2B investment in Mexico

  • 31st October 2025

The energy group COX announced a $4.2 billion investment to develop solar and wind parks in the Monterrey Metropolitan Zone and nearby municipalities. This initiative will generate over 4,000 temporary jobs during construction and 250 permanent positions, positioning Nuevo León as a central hub for Mexico’s energy transition. The investment is part of a comprehensive strategy that also includes water treatment and reuse, gas cogeneration, and energy efficiency. Projects will be located in El Carmen, Apodaca, Dulces Nombres, Monterrey, and Sabinas. COX founder and president Enrique Riquelme emphasized that the decision is driven by the state’s favorable investment environment, sustained industrial growth, and the presence of global companies requiring reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

Following the acquisition of Iberdrola México, a significant portion of that investment is already concentrated in Nuevo León. With this new expansion, COX aims to broaden its renewable energy generation portfolio and address the energy and water demand stemming from the region’s manufacturing boom. Governor Samuel García welcomed the announcement, stating that projects of this scale continue to position Nuevo León as the country’s economic engine: “We remain in first place in attracting investment, and with COX, we are advancing toward a cleaner, more competitive, and sustainable energy model.”

COX plans to establish its headquarters for the Americas in Nuevo León, from where all operational plants across the continent will be coordinated. This COX plan represents one of the largest energy investments of the year in Mexico, with direct impacts on employment, green infrastructure, and industrial modernization in northern Mexico. It will also reinforce Nuevo León’s position as a regional hub for clean energy, aligned with national goals for decarbonization and energy security, supporting the manufacturing boom.
