Mexico tariff hike proposal approved by congress

Mexico’s Congress-approved tariff hike proposal covers nearly 1,500 import products, including cars, textiles, clothing, plastics, and steel, raising rates up to 50%. Submitted to the lower house in early September 9th,2025(墨新关税:总结与中墨商会立场 Mexico’s new tariff:Summary & MEXCHAM’s position墨西哥考虑暂缓关税上调 Mexico is considering pauses tariff hikes) it aims to protect domestic industries, foster manufacutring locally, aligned with the National Development Plan (PND 2025-2030) emphasizing industrial competitiveness and equitable income distribution.

This import tariff hike is  targeted at all countries which are countries without free trade agreements (FTAs) with Mexico, over 100 nations including South Korea, India, Indonesia, China, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey. Approved by Congress, the bill has not yet been published in the Official Gazette (DOF) and it is expected to be published in the following days, and it is expected to enter into force in Janurary 1st 2026.
