Chinese brands drive Mexico’s April new car sales to record high

  • 15th May 2026
Mexican car sales hit a new record in April 2026. New light vehicle sales increased by 8.6% year-on-year, reaching nearly 119,000 units. Mexican media reported that this growth was mainly due to the boost from Chinese brands, which attracted a large number of consumers with their competitive prices, more ample inventory, and richer product lines.

According to a report in the Mexican newspaper El Financiero, the Mexican Association of Automobile Dealers (AMDA) indicated that if brands that did not report data to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) were included in the statistics, the actual sales in April were expected to exceed 126,000 units, an increase of 8.5% year-on-year. The association’s president, Guillermo Rosales Zárate, stated that total car sales from March to April this year exceeded 250,000 units, an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period last year, or an increase of 12,574 units.

In the first four months of this year, cumulative car sales in Mexico exceeded 500,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%, setting a new record for the same period and surpassing the nearly 494,000 units sold in the same period of 2017.

Rosales stated that this data reflects that both April’s single-month sales and the cumulative sales for the first four months reached the highest levels since the National Institute of Statistics and Geography began compiling relevant statistics.

Chinese car sales in Mexico maintained strong momentum. In April, sales of brands such as Geely and Jetour-Southeast increased by nearly four times and seven times respectively; MG and Changan Automobile also achieved double-digit growth, further consolidating their market positions. Specifically, compared with the same period last year, Changan Automobile’s sales in April increased by 101% to 2,095 units; Geely Automobile’s sales increased by 283% to over 4,000 units; and Jetour-Southeast performed particularly well, with sales increasing by 610% to 547 units.

Rosales stated that the current strong performance of the automotive industry is largely due to the ample inventory held by Chinese car importers, which helps to mitigate the impact of price increases and maintain short-term competitiveness. He predicts that prices will gradually adjust as inventory is depleted and supply recovers, but the price increase will not be too large, and fierce competition among brands in the market will continue.
