Aztema Opens US$400M Tire Plant in Mexico

  • 3rd July 2025

Aztema, a joint venture between China-based Sailun (51%) and Mexico’s Tire Direct (49%), has officially launched production at its new tire manufacturing plant in Irapuato, Guanajuato. Representing an investment of US$400 million, the facility is projected to produce up to 6 million tires annually for domestic and international markets, according to the National Chamber of the Rubber Industry (CNIH).

Construction of the Irapuato plant began in April 2024, with the first tire produced on May 31, marking the start of technical operations.

“The CNIH sees these developments as part of the natural evolution of a globalized industry, with redirected investments, capacity expansions, and stronger integration of local suppliers. These steps solidify the industry as a key pillar of Mexico’s automotive sector and a driver of innovation and economic growth,” said Adriana Montelongo, Director General, CNIH.

Juan Ríos y Valles, President, CNIH, emphasized the transformative impact of recent investments on Mexico’s role in mobility and workforce development. “These investments, alongside evolving corporate strategies, position Mexico’s tire industry as a critical engine for mobility. It also strengthens the national value chain and creates highly specialized employment opportunities,” he said.

Guanajuato is home to several major tire manufacturers. Beyond Michelin, Italian firm Pirelli operates a facility in Silao’s Guanajuato Puerto Interior. As of the first quarter of 2024, Pirelli achieved a production milestone of 50 million units at this site and inaugurated a Center for Research, Development, Innovation, and Professional Training.

The CNIH highlights that Mexico’s tire industry continues to advance through substantial investments, enhanced productivity, and sustainability initiatives. The integration of local suppliers and the development of specialized talent further bolster these trends.

“The tire sector is not only driving Mexico’s economic and technological progress but also projecting its competitiveness on a global scale, building a robust and forward-thinking industrial ecosystem,” Montelongo added.
