BYD is revising its distribution strategy in Mexico following the departure of Liverpool as its initial dealership partner. The Chinese automaker announced that the seven BYD stores previously managed by Liverpool will be transferred to established automotive dealer groups. These locations, situated in key markets such as Perisur, Galerías Insurgentes (Mexico City), Santa Anita, and Guadalajara (Jalisco), will continue operations under new management.
Arturo Gutiérrez, BYD Mexico’s Head of Dealer Development, described the transition as strategic and amicable. “They will continue their path, and we will continue ours. We are very grateful for the collaboration. There was no conflict,” Gutiérrez told Expansión. “We will even maintain some of their facilities during the transition.”
Liverpool, known for its retail operations, ventured into the automotive sector through its partnership with BYD. However, the retailer has decided to refocus on its core business. BYD’s need for larger, dedicated facilities outgrew the mall-based showroom model. “The current spaces were too small, with limited workshop capacity. Transitioning to experienced automotive dealers will ensure more integrated operations,” Gutiérrez explained.
Customers who purchased vehicles through Liverpool dealerships will see no disruption. Sales advisors and service teams will remain intact under the new management. “If you bought a car at Perisur, your advisor and agency are still there. The only change is the group managing the operation,” said Gutiérrez.
This reorganization is part of BYD’s broader expansion efforts. The company currently collaborates with 23 dealer groups in Mexico and plans to operate 80 dealerships nationwide by mid-2025. Recent openings include locations in Santa Monica, Iztapalapa, Cancun, and Avenida Universidad.
Gutiérrez stressed that Liverpool’s role was one of several partnerships, not the foundation of BYD’s entry into Mexico. “Liverpool did not bring us here. We were already present. They were one of many commercial partners,” he clarified.
