Mexico’s wind investment is expected to reach US$5B by 2030

According to estimates from the National Energy Control Center, the National Energy Commission and the Mexican Wind Energy Association, Mexico is set to enter a new phase of wind energy expansion, with projected investment of $4 billion to $5 billion by 2030 and 2,159 megawatts of new installed capacity.

Currently, 76 wind farms operate across 16 states in Mexico, with an installed capacity of 8,131 megawatts supported by more than 3,300 wind turbines. The entire wind power infrastructure generates enough electricity to supply about 12.1 million households, creates over 10,000 jobs, and avoids 9.59 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, making it one of the core pillars of the country’s energy transition.

Growing investment potential in power generation

The Mexico Transition Outlook 2026 released by BloombergNEF also supports the industry’s positive prospects. The report estimates that Mexico will attract $630 billion in new investment in power generation assets by 2035, mainly driven by renewable energy projects and energy storage systems.

Under the economic transition scenario developed by BloombergNEF, the total installed capacity of wind, solar and energy storage in Mexico will reach 269 gigawatts by 2050, accounting for more than 80% of the total installed capacity of the national power system. In addition, the Mexican government has launched a strategic plan to add nearly 30 gigawatts of renewable energy and energy storage capacity by 2030, and to increase the participation of the private sector in project development.

Industrial demand drives new project development

The expected growth of the wind power industry is mainly in response to the rising electricity demand brought by industrial expansion, industrial chain relocation, data center expansion and economic digitalization. The Mexican Wind Energy Association pointed out that driven by multiple factors, expanding power generation infrastructure and upgrading the national grid have become essential priorities.

Meanwhile, driven by the planning mechanism of the federal government and the Federal Electricity Commission, Mexico has approved more than 3,900 megawatts of new wind power capacity by 2030. The industry also has a project pipeline of nearly 2,500 megawatts pending development, equivalent to about 30% of the current installed capacity. The government also plans to add 6,800 megawatts of wind power capacity during the current presidential term.

Professional engineering is key to expansion

The expansion of the wind power industry will also drive market demand for engineering design, transportation and hoisting of large components. In this segment, companies including Sarens have participated in multiple strategic projects for Mexico’s wind power infrastructure.

These include the unloading of 64 V162 and V163 wind turbines at the Port of Asipona in Baja California. The project used high-capacity cranes and professional logistics solutions to handle components weighing up to 103 tons, overcoming operational constraints in the port area.

Jose Aceves, Country Manager of Sarens Mexico, stated that the large-scale expansion planned in the coming years requires professional technical capabilities to ensure project implementation.

“Wind energy is at a decisive moment in Mexico. All signs indicate that investment and new infrastructure construction will accelerate in the coming years. To achieve this growth, partners with technical expertise, engineering solutions and professional equipment are essential.”

The company has also participated in the renovation of the Reynosa wind farm in Tamaulipas, as well as multiple offshore and onshore wind power projects worldwide, and plans to apply its international experience to the development of Mexico’s energy infrastructure.
