On September 7, 2026, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez held a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his official visit to Beijing, focusing on bilateral cooperation and shared development topics.
During the meeting, Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to building a constructive bilateral relationship with China to explore new cooperation opportunities and jointly address global challenges. The two sides agreed to continue the bilateral political consultation mechanism and formulate a joint development roadmap. Mexico expressed willingness to advance practical cooperation in health, education, science and innovation, environmental protection and rural development.
Roberto Velasco stated that Mexico pursues an independent foreign policy and advocates dialogue and cooperation with all nations. Both countries uphold shared principles including respect for sovereignty, equality and non-interference, which align with China’s Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. He confirmed that Mexico has firmly adhered to the one-China principle since voting for UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 in 1971.
Education and health cooperation serve as long-standing pillars of Mexico-China relations. During the September 2026 meeting, both officials recognized scholarship and academic exchange programs as mutually beneficial cooperation achievements that strengthen people-to-people friendship.
The two countries maintain active and constructive dialogue on multilateral platforms including the G20 and APEC. Mexico recognized China’s leadership and preparation work for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 2026 in Shenzhen, expecting further coordination through multilateral mechanisms.
