Mexico’s President Sheinbaum to attend APEC Summit in Shenzhen

  • 13th October 2026

Local media has recently discussed Mexico’s potential engagement with BRICS. The topic remains an analytical scenario put forward by media and experts instead of a finalized government policy.

Under BRICS admission rules, candidate countries shall take the initiative to state their accession willingness, and new‑member admission requires consensus among all existing members. Even without formal membership, Mexico can still expand trade and diverse cooperation with individual BRICS member states.

On September 23, 2026, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she would attend the APEC Summit, scheduled for November 18–19, 2026, in Shenzhen, China. The trip draws attention to China‑Mexico bilateral economic and trade ties amid the ongoing review of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Mexico maintains a diversified external economic and trade landscape, and China acts as an important partner for trade, investment and technology cooperation with Mexico. The USMCA is currently undergoing review negotiations, covering key industries such as automotive rules of origin, steel and aluminum. President Sheinbaum travels to China to attend the APEC Summit, offering a platform for China and Mexico to hold official meetings and discuss economic and trade-related topics.
