Tianjin Port launches new direct shipping route to Mexico

  • 27th July 2026

On July 8, 2026, under the supervision of Tianjin Xingang Customs, the vessel MSC Lorena departed from Tianjin Port loaded with mechanical, electrical and daily goods bound for Mexico, marking the official launch of a new shipping route from Tianjin Port to Mexico.

Basic operation layout of the shipping route

Operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company, the route deploys seven container vessels with a capacity of 5,000 TEUs each, forming a closed-loop shipping route covering China, South Korea and Mexico and focusing on freight transportation between northern Chinese ports and Mexico. The route calls at Port of Manzanillo, Port of Lázaro Cárdenas and Port of Ensenada in Mexico, enriching Tianjin Port’s Latin American shipping network and expected to add 60,000 TEUs of export volume to the port every year.

Greatly shortened shipping time improves cross-border logistics efficiency

China has long been Mexico’s second largest trading partner and major source of imported goods. Previously, cargo shipped to Mexico’s west coast usually required transshipment in ports of Japan and South Korea, with a total transit time ranging from 28 to 32 days. Complicated transshipment procedures and volatile sailing schedules increased logistics and warehousing costs for trading enterprises. After the launch of the new route, the shipping duration is cut by 8 to 12 days, making it one of the most time-efficient sea lanes from North China to Mexico.

Two-way cargo flow meets bilateral industrial trade demands between China and Mexico

Relevant personnel from Tianjin Ocean Shipping Agency noted that the stable sailing schedule enables efficient delivery of exported goods such as electronic products and auto parts from North China, cutting logistics costs and boosting the competitiveness of Chinese commodities in the Mexican market. The return voyage steadily transports imported goods including mineral products, avocados, berries and tequila from Mexico, satisfying bilateral industrial and consumption trade demands of the two countries.
