Volaris Airlines Allies with Hainan Airlines

  • 23rd June 2025

Mexico’s low-cost carrier Volaris announced on Tuesday a strategic cooperation agreement with China’s Hainan Airlines to strengthen air transport links between China and Mexico. Under the agreement, the two airlines will establish a convenient transfer system using Mexico City International Airport and Tijuana International Airport as major hubs, connecting Asian and Latin American markets.

The partnership combines two airlines with distinct positioning. Hainan Airlines operates as a full-service carrier with a route network covering Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and Africa, operating over 1,700 routes. Volaris, holding over 42% of Mexico’s domestic market share as the country’s largest airline, focuses on expanding its ultra-low-cost business model. Industry experts note that this “full-service + ultra-low-cost” combination is relatively rare and is expected to be implemented through code-sharing arrangements.

The agreement still requires regulatory approval with both parties planning to officially launch the cooperation in the second half of 2025. Once implemented, passengers will be able to book flights to over 50 Mexican domestic destinations operated by Volaris through Hainan Airlines’ platform in a single transaction, significantly simplifying travel from Asia to Mexico’s interior regions.

It is reported that Hainan Airlines has operated two weekly flights to Mexico since 2023, serving Mexico City and Tijuana respectively. After the partnership takes effect, all flights will be integrated into Hainan Airlines’ official sales channels, which is expected to further enhance convenience for Mexican travelers accessing China and other international markets.

Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena stated in the press release: “We are proud to establish this strategic partnership with the prestigious Hainan Airlines. Hainan’s extensive coverage in China opens up new possibilities for tourism and business exchanges between China and Mexico.”
